After the 22nd position about ten days ago, today we’re focusing on the 21st position at the Eurovision Song Contest.

Interestingly enough, there’s only been a single year in the history of the show with 21 participants. That was 1988.
If it wasn’t for Cyprus (that was drawn to perform 2nd on the night) withdrawing because their entry breached the contest’s rules for prior release and registration (the song had finished 3rd in their 1984 national final – like, seriously?) there would have never been a contest with that number of participants, ever.

In total, there’s been a 21st position on 31 occasions – with 20 different countries occupying it at least once. Also, Cyprus definitely seems to have a strong link to that number since they’re also the country holding the occupancy record with 4 times (2000,2010,2016,2017).

Regarding the big 5 finally, after holding some kind of record for never having finished, 26,25,24,23,22, the 21st position is the worst Italy finished in at a Eurovision final, and it happened 3 years ago. On the other hand, France and the United Kingdom, that have somehow started to become faithful visitors of the lower positionr over the past two decades have never ever finished 21st.

Anything shocking in there ? What your favourite 21st placing song ever ?
